FSA Consultation on Total Sugars Criterion for FSA's Front of Pack Labelling Scheme

FDF has made a submission in response to FSA's request for views on its nutritional criterion underpinning the 'high' band for total sugars (and thus determining the red colour coding). FSA established an expert group in January 2006 to review the IGD figure of 90g for total sugars used in its consultation on a voluntary front of pack signpost labelling scheme. The expert group considered two possible options for total sugars – the IGD figure of 90g and a lower figure of 60g developed specifically for manufactured products – and, although the group did not reach a unanimous view, the majority supported the use of the lower figure. As the GDA figure is used to set the value for the 'high' threshold (set at 25% of the GDA), a change in the total sugars GDA from 90g to 60g will make the 'high' threshold stricter (from 22.5g/100g to 15g/100g).
