Better Regulation
Regulation is important in the food and drink industry because it protects
workers, consumers and the environment we live in. But too much inappropriate
regulation imposes unnecessary costs and administrative burdens on companies –
and
even
risks making the industry uncompetitive.
FDF welcomes commitments made by policy makers to ensure 'better regulation'.
The UK Government has pledged to cut the red tape companies face by 25% by
2010,
while the European Commission has promised to reduce the costs of its
administrative burdens on business by the same amount by 2012.
FDF would also like to see the UK Government's Five Principles of Good
Regulation applied to all new regulatory proposals made both here and in
Europe.
The
principles are that regulation is: proportionate, accountable, consistent,
transparent
and targeted. FDF is pleased that these principles are being given legal
backing
in the UK Government's Regulation, Enforcement and Sanctions Bill,
which
is
currently before Parliament. FDF also supports the Government Food
Industry
Better
Regulation Group, set up by the UK Government to deliver
better
regulation for the
food and drink sector.
