Environment
FDF and our members have committed to making a real difference to the
environment. In October 2007 we launched an ambitious plan targeting the five areas where
we feel we can have the biggest impact. In 2010 we reviewed our core Ambitions
and updated our targets; we also extended the scope of the Ambition into the
supply chain and set ourselves some specific deliverables.
The goals outlined in FDF's Five-fold Environmental Ambition are challenging. But we hope
that our leadership
in this area, and our
determination to make a positive
contribution to efforts to tackle climate
change,
will be seen as a sign of how
seriously we are taking society's growing
concerns about the environment.
This is not a new issue for us – FDF members have a good record of reducing
their environmental impacts in recent years. And our case studies show how much has
already been achieved. But given the food chain's importance to the environment,
we accept that we have more work to do and have therefore published new aims
which include encouraging the development of life-cycle thinking and promoting
resource efficiency at all stages of production and consumption throughout the
supply chain.
Working collectively, therefore, our updated Five-fold Environmental Ambition
aims to:
- Achieve a 35% absolute reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020
- Send zero food and packaging waste to landfill at the latest by 2015 and make a
significant contribution to WRAP's Courtauld Commitment Phase 2 target to
reduce
product and packaging waste in the supply chain by 5% by the end of 2012
against
a 2009 baseline
- Make a significant contribution to WRAP's Courtauld Commitment Phase 2 to
reducing the carbon impact of packaging by 10% by 2012 against a 2009 baseline.
For
those companies that wish to reduce the impact of packaging outside of the
agreement we will continue to report their achievements in the form of case
studies
- Achieve significant reductions in water use and contribute to the industry-wide
absolute target to reduce water use by 20% by 2020 compared to 2007 under the
Federation House Commitment, and to develop guidance on water use and
management
in the supply chain
- Embed environmental standards in our transport practices through our 'fewer and
friendlier' transport commitment and contributing for the first time to IGD's
Sustainable Distribution initiative
Our fourth progress report was launched in December 2011. It shows that FDF
members are collectively making solid progress in key areas. In particular:
- Cut CO2 emissions by 25%
- Reduced product and packaging waste in the supply chain by 6.9%
- Cut the carbon impact of packaging by 1.2%
- Reduced water use (outside that embedded in product) by 5.3%
- Saved 163 million HGV road miles
