Fish
Food and Drink Federation (FDF) members include some of the world's biggest and
best-known manufacturers of fish products and they take their responsibilities
for responsible sourcing and sustainability very seriously.
The FDF has been calling for radical reform of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy
and we welcome the publication of the Commission's proposals, and in particular
their plans to end the highly wasteful practice of discarding perfectly edible
fish at sea. We have been working with stakeholders and partners including the
WWF to press for fisheries management changes based on long-term plans for
protecting and rebuilding fish stocks to deliver sustainable supplies of quality fish
to consumers at prices they can afford and allowing them to reap the huge health
benefits from eating more fish.
We also welcome the Commission's plans to open a discussion about the provision
of more information to consumers about the origin and sustainability of supplies
from whatever source. But changes to labelling must be proportionate and
contribute to genuine consumer choice. Fish is a healthy nutritious product that works
equally well for consumers whether it is fresh, defrosted, frozen or tinned.
