Trade Liberalisation
Markets of all kinds – including the market for food and drink - work best when
they are open and operate free of regulation and levies. However, at the
moment,
there are many trade barriers in place around the world which make it more
difficult or expensive for the UK's food and drink manufacturers to do business
with
customers and suppliers in some countries. This is why FDF supports the trade
liberalisation process being pursued by the 153 national governments in the
World
Trade Organisation under an initiative called the Doha Development Agenda.
FDF members also welcome the European Commission's own attempts to negotiate
directly Free Trade Agreements with many countries around the world. Besides
improving the commercial prospects of UK food and drink companies, this could
also
achieve social and environmental benefits in many countries in the developing
world,
too.
