Waste Reduction
Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill is a priority for FDF. In
particular FDF's Five-Fold Environmental Ambition includes an aspiration for FDF
members
to send zero food and packaging waste from their sites to landfill from
2015.
This
reflects FDF's support for the waste hierarchy which places
disposal
such
as
landfill at the bottom as the least preferable option. At the
top
of
the
hierarchy is
waste prevention and FDF members are working with
Waste
and
Resources
Action
Programme (WRAP), FareShare, National
Industrial
Symbiosis
Programme
(NISP)
and other
partners to achieve this
wherever
possible
through
adoption of
best
practice.
We are also working with Government, WRAP and the Environment Agency, the waste
industry and others to encourage growth in the nation's waste treatment
infrastructure, for example anaerobic digestion plants and composting facilities. Both
of
these are environmentally preferable options to landfilling.
